Defined by the ACCO, "Chiropractic Orthopedics shall be considered that branch of orthopedics, the purposes of which are by noncutting techniques, to prevent and correct deformity, to preserve and improve the function of bones, muscles, joints and their nerve apparatus, when such is threatened or impaired by defects, lesions, or disease."

Doctors of Chiropractic ( D.C.), like Medical Doctors, can remain  in general practice or they can specialize.  There are several fields of specialty, the oldest  being Chiropractic Orthopedics.   D.A.B.C.O is the acronym for "Diplomate of the American Board of Chiropractic Orthopedics."

Certification in Chiropractic Orthopedics requires an additional 4 years of education after graduation with a Doctor of Chiropractic degree.  The focus is on orthopedics (biomechanics as well as pathology), but in a non-surgical and non-pharmaceutical direction. Board Examinations, both written and oral must then be passed.  It is at this point that the doctor can achieve "Diplomate" status and possibly Fellowship in the ACCO.

In addition, you may see the letters F.A.C.O, once Diplomate status is achieved. These letters represent Fellow, Academy of Chiropractic Orthopedists.
